Texas Heads To Super Regionals With 4-1 Win Over Rice

AUSTIN, Texas - The No. 3 Texas Longhorns captured their 32nd NCAA Regional title with a 4-1 win over the Rice Owls at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Sunday evening.
Taylor Jungmann and Chance Ruffin combined to hold Rice's potent offense to just three hits on the evening. Jungmann (7-3) scattered two hits and two walks and allowed one run while striking out seven over 7.2 innings to earn the win. Ruffin closed out the game, fanning one and yielding one hit in 1.1 innings.
The Longhorns improved to 9-0 on the season with Jungmann as the starting pitcher at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Texas (49-11) drew first blood in the top of the fourth inning. Tant Shepherd hit a lead-off double to leftfield, moved to third on a deep fly out by Kevin Keyes and scored when Cameron Rupp dropped a single down the leftfield line to stake the Horns to a 1-0 lead.
The Longhorns tacked on another run in the top of the sixth. Brandon Loy drew a lead-off walk and moved to second on a groundout by Shepherd. Russell Moldenhauer plated Loy with a wall-banger to the right centerfield gap for a double.
Texas added two insurance runs in the eighth. With two outs, Shepherd was hit by a pitch and Moldenhauer followed with a moon shot over the Wendy's sign down the rightfield line to increase the margin to 4-0.
Rice (40-23) mounted a rally in the home half of the eighth, but it came up short. With two outs, Michael Fuda drew a walk. Ruffin came into relieve Jungmann with a 1-0 count on Craig Manuel and yielded an RBI double that barely managed to stay in the ballpark. Ruffin got out of the inning thanks to a carnival-like play by second baseman Jordan Etier diving for ground ball deep up the middle and bounding to his feet in time to retire Jimmy Comerota for the final out of the inning.
Moldenhauer went 2-for-4 with one double, one home run and three RBI to spark the Longhorns' offense. Rupp went 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Manuel was the lone Owl to produce multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI.
Boogie Anagnostou (3-5) was saddled with the loss. He allowed two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out four over 5.1 innings.
Rice's Anthony Rendon was tabbed the NCAA Austin Regional Most Outstanding Player with his three home runs and seven RBI on the year. The NCAA Austin Regional All-Tournament Team included P Zach Osborne (Louisiana), P Taylor Jungmann (Texas), C Cameron Rupp (Texas), 1B Justin Robichaux (Louisiana), 2B A.J. Albee (Rider), 3B Anthony Rendon (Rice), SS Brandon Loy (Texas), OF Michael Fuda (Rice), OF Kevin Keyes (Texas), OF Chad Mozingo (Rice), DH Russell Moldenhauer (Texas).
The start date for the Austin Super Regional between Texas and TCU will not be determined until Monday evening. Four of the best-of-three Super Regionals will start on Friday and four of the Super Regionals will start on Saturday.
