MRI reveals torn UCL in junior left-handed pitcher’s elbow

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- South Carolina junior left-handed pitcher Nolan Belcher sustained an injury to his left elbow and will miss the entire 2011 season after suffering a tear in the UCL, the school announced Monday.
Belcher underwent an MRI on Monday afternoon and is tentatively set to undergo surgery on Thursday. He will automatically qualify for a medical redshirt and will have two years of eligibility remaining when he returns.
Belcher was 3-1 with a 2.43 ERA in 29.2 innings with 32 strikeouts and 18 walks in 11 games last season and was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll.
As a freshman in 2009, he was 4-5 with a 4.57 ERA in 82.2 innings with 76 strikeouts and 41 walks and was named to the SEC All-Freshman team and Freshmen Academic Honor Roll.
