Thomas More holds off Westminster
Saints clinch their ninth consecutive 20-win season
CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -- Thomas More defeated Westminster College 8-5 on Monday in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Ky.
With the win, the Saints clinch their ninth consecutive 20-win season and 18th in the history of the program as they improve to 20-4 overall and 10-3 in the PAC. With the loss, the Titans fall to 18-7 overall and 5-4 in the PAC.
The Saints plated one run in the first, two in the second, three in the fifth, one in the sixth and one in the eighth, while holding Westminster to one run in the first and four in the seventh.
The Saints were led at the plate by sophomore shortstop David Kennett and junior first baseman Andrew Thole as Kennett was three-for-four with a run batted-in and a run scored and Thole was three-for-five with a double, a RBI and a run scored. Three other Saints had multiple hits in the game as senior third baseman Sam Schmeltzer was two-for-five with a double, a RBI and a run scored, sophomore right fielder Ryan Darner was two-for-five with a RBI and senior catcher Nick Ryan was two-for-three with a run scored.
Junior Aaron Carmack earned the win on the mound as he pitched five innings giving up one run on five hits and striking out four. Sophomore David Etscheid pitched two and one-third innings of relief to earn his first save of the year as he gave up no hits and struck out two.
