Arizona State rallies past New Mexico
DeMichele's walk-off homer powers Sun Devils' comeback
TEMPE, Ariz. -- Joey DeMichele hit a walk-off three-run homer with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Arizona State a 4-2 victory against New Mexico on Friday night in the NCAA Tempe Regional.
After left-hander Rudy Jaramillo allowed a run on four hits over eight innings for New Mexico, the Sun Devils’ Johnny Ruettiger opened the ninth with a single.
Reliever Gera Sanchez (2-3) then faced Deven Marrero, who tried to bunt Ruttiger over to second. Sanchez fielded the bunt and threw to first, but second baseman Kyle Stiner didn’t field it cleanly. However, plate umpire John Haggerty called Marrero out for interference and sent Marrero back to first.
The runners advanced on a wild pitch and DeMichele followed with his eighth home run of the season.
DeMichele also had an RBI double in the seventh.
Mitchell Lambson (6-3) pitched the ninth for the victory.
