Stanford squeaks by Cal St-Fullerton
Piscotty's solo home run provides winning margin for Cardinal
FULLERTON, Calif. -- Jordan Pries limited Cal State Fullerton to two hits in 7 2-3 innings, closer Chris Reed got the final four outs, and Stephen Piscotty homered in Stanford’s controversial 1-0 victory Saturday night in the NCAA Fullerton Regional.
Fullerton’s Greg Velazquez appeared to single in a run in the fifth, but the third-base umpire ruled left fielder Tyler Gaffney made a diving catch for the third out. Replays clearly showed the ball hit the ground.
Piscotty homered to left in the bottom of the sixth.
The Titans threatened in the top of the eighth, but Reed stranded a runner on third.
Fullerton’s Noe Ramirez allowed four hits and struck out a season-high 12.
Fullerton will play Illinois on Sunday in an elimination game, with the winner advancing to face Stanford.
