MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Fourth-ranked Christopher Newport (10-2) scored two runs in the top of the ninth and one in the 10th to escape with a 4-3 extra-inning victory against Catholic on Tuesday afternoon. Catholic falls to 6-3 overall on the season and saw its four-game winning streak stopped thanks to clutch hitting late in the game by the Captains.

Ryan Fleischmann picked up the win after closing out the game with two innings of scoreless relief. He struck out four and allowed just two hits. Jacob Vaughan threw 5.2 innings, giving up five hits and two walks while striking out three and allowing just two earned runs for the Captains.

CNU trailed 3-1 heading into the ninth inning when the Captains stormed back with a pair of runs to tie the game. Christopher Newport took the momentum into the tenth inning when, with the bases loaded, Billy Steel picked up a walk to score the eventual game-winning RBI. Steel finished 1-5 on the day with two RBIs.

Catholic loaded the bases in the bottom of the 10th, but Fleischmann escaped without allowing a run to earn the victory.

Ben Lenda and Steven Keener picked up three hits each and Lenda added in a winning cause for CNU. The Captains bullpen was strong again, seeing 4.1 innings of work, striking out six and giving up just one run. Richard Lindsay went 1.1 innings with one K and Matt Verdillo followed it up with one inning and recorded a lone strikeout as well.
