Oklahoma eliminates Appalachian St.
Sooners avenge tournament-opening loss to Mountaineers
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Oklahoma built a 4-1 lead after three innings and held on for a 5-2 win against Appalachian State to advance to the Columbia NCAA Super Regional against South Carolina.
The Sooners (42-23) and Mountaineers (41-18) played their second day of the game. OU won the first game easily 14-6 behind four RBIs from Matt Oberste and six from Cody Reine.
In the second game, Jack Mayfield drove in three runs to give Drew Harrison plenty of insurance in his first start on the mound. Harrison lasted a career-high six innings and allowed two runs off three hits with four strikeouts. It marked Harrison’s first-career decision as Steven Okert recorded his fifth save of the season to close the door.
OU will play in its third NCAA Super Regional and first since last playing in Charlottesville in 2010 against Virginia.
All three Super Regional appearances have come under head coach Sunny Golloway.
