Louisiana-Lafayette eliminates Sam Houston State behind Adams' homers
BATON ROUGE, La. -- Matt Plitt pitched six strong innings of relief, Caleb Adams hit a pair of two-run homers, and Louisiana-Lafayette eliminated Sam Houston State from the NCAA tournament with a 7-5 victory in the Baton Rouge regional Sunday.
Plitt (4-1) entered after Ryan Farney's homer gave Sam Houston a 3-0 lead in the second. He retired 15 consecutive batters before allowing his first hit in the seventh.
Plagued by shoddy fielding, the Bearkats (38-22) allowed five unearned runs that undermined a solid performance by starter Andrew Godail (5-4). Third baseman Kevin Miller made two errors in the third, the second allowing a run with two outs and bringing Adams to the plate for his first homer, which tied it at 3.
Shortstop Carter Burgess's error in the fourth led to two more unearned runs for ULL (43-19).
The Cajuns advanced to play LSU, needing to beat the Tigers twice.
