Sweet Caroline blaring. Where's Big Papi?

TV Timeout: Kids, when you buy a new lid, take off the stickers; the big leaguers do.

Justin Cureton K's for the first out; he tried to bunt three times, fouled off each of the pitches. ... Will Nolden strikes out. ... He strokes an RBI-single to center to plate Basil. ... And Chad Girodo is warming in the bullpen for Mississippi State. ... Chad Clark flies out to right to end the inning. ... Tied 1-1
T2: Indiana lefty Will Coursen-Carr seems to be settling in; he retired MSU in order -- C.T. Bradford (ground out), Demarcus Henderson (ground out) and Nick Ammirati (pop up). A three-up, three-down frame is what he needed.
B1: Bulldogs starter Trevor Fitts retires the Hoosiers 1-2-3 in the bottom of the first: two strikeouts -- Will Nolden (looking) and Kyle Schwarber (swining) -- and a sky-high pop fly to center off the bat of Sam Travis. Fifteen pitches, 10 strikes -- that's pounding the strike zone.
T1: Disastrous start for Indiana's Will Coursen-Carr as he gives up a hit to Adam Frazier, then plunks Alex Detz on the first two pitches of the game before a wild pitch moved those two to second and third. Bad base running may have just helped him, though, as Hunter Renfroe hit a ground ball to SS and Detz was thrown out crossing in front trying to go to third. A run did score and Renfroe ended up all the way on second thanks to the run down. Indiana gives up its first run at the CWS in its history ... How about a second runner thrown out trying to go to third base on a grounder to SS? Renfroe is thrown out for the second out of the inning after a Brett Pirtle ground ball in the hole. Real nice job by Indiana shortstop Michael Basil to cut down two runners this inning ... A strikeout ends the inning -- you have to be ecstatic if you're a Hoosiers fan after that start ... 1-0 Mississippi State.
Pregame: Weather is perfect for tonight's second game. It's 83 degrees with bright sunshine as the shadows start to creep across TD Ameritrade Park Omaha. First pitch is right around the corner.
Pregame: Here are your starting pitchers: Indiana will send lefthander Will Coursen-Carr (5-0, 1.80) to the mound. The last time we saw him was in the Tallahassee Super Regional when he shut down the Seminoles out of the bullpen in Game 2. He's started only 10 games this year with 16 appearances overall and has struck out just 33 batters in 60 innings. The good news is he's allowed just 50 hits in those innings. For Mississippi State, Trevor Fitts (0-0, 2.42) takes the hill with just four starts under his belt in 2013 -- two of those in the postseason against Central Arkansas and Virginia. The sophomore has allowed 22 hits in 26.0 innings of work and hasn't tossed more than 3.1 innings in a game, which came against Missouri on May 21 in relief. Usually don't see this type of pitching matchup in a winners' bracket game but that's what we have.
Pregame: Great note before we get going here in the nightcap: Indiana is the only undefeated team in CWS history. Chew on that for a minute.
Pregame: We're back after a shorter break between games than we had the last couple of days. Up next in a winners' bracket game at 8:10 p.m. ET, it's visiting Mississippi State taking on Indiana. We'll have starting pitchers and more in a bit.
Indiana became just the third first-time CWS participant to win its opening game since 2000. The Hoosiers joined both TCU (2010 def. Florida State, 8-1) and Vanderbilt (2011 def. North Carolina, 7-3). ... The Hoosiers extended their current winning streak to seven games, which includes the Bloomington Regional and Tallahassee Super Regional sweeps. During that stretch they have outscored their opponents 53-29. ... IU’s shutout in its first CWS game is the first by a first time participant since 1994 when Georgia Tech blanked Cal State Fullerton 2-0.
Jonathan Holder notched his SEC and team leading 19th save of the year, which extended his single-season school record. Holder now has 28 career saves, which is one shy of tying the MSU all-time record held by Van Johnson (1995-98). ... Hunter Renfroe reached on an infield single in the seventh inning against Oregon State to extend his current hit streak to eight games. He has now registered at least one hit in 50 of 62 games. ... Adam Frazier set the single-season school record for hits (104) with his infield single in the fifth inning against Oregon State. The record was set by Brian Wiese in 1998 in Rosenblatt Stadium at the CWS (vs. LSU on June 1). Frazier has a team-best 14 hits in NCAA play this season.
