AUSTIN, Texas -- Fifteenth-ranked St. Edward's stole home twice en route to an 8-5 victory against Heartland Conference rival Newman Saturday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field. The win gives the Hilltoppers a three-game sweep of the Jets and a four-game winning streak.
For the third time in this three-game series, St. Edward's (20-9, 7-5 HC) struck in the first inning. Ransom LaLonde came up with the big hit, scoring two with a single up the middle. He would also score that inning on a double steal, where LaLonde just slid in under the tag of the catcher to make it 3-0.
Wes Koenig made it 4-0 in the third inning when he launched a solo home run on the screen in right field for his fifth of the season.
The Hilltoppers got a four spot in the fourth inning. Chris Killeen and AJ Hermanson pulled off the double steal again for St. Edward's that plated Hermanson. Ryan Dolezal, Gable Whitacre and Koenig each had run-scoring hits during the inning as the Hilltoppers increased their lead to 8-2.
The Jets would get three runs in the eighth inning, but the Hilltopper bullpen shut the door for the sweep.
Cam Hatch (2-0) picked up the victory, allowing two runs on four hits, while striking out seven batters in 5.0 innings of work.
Dalton Brown picked up his first save as a Hilltopper, allowing just one hit and striking out one as he worked the ninth inning for St. Edward's.
