Mississippi edges Washington to advance to regional championship

OXFORD, Miss. -- Christian Trent and Aaron Greenwood combined on a six-hitter to lead Mississippi against Washington 2-1 in the NCAA tournament's Oxford Regional on Sunday.

Ole Miss (43-18) advanced to the regional championship Monday, when it will meet Washington again. Washington beat Georgia Tech 4-2 in an elimination game Sunday. Washington will have to beat Ole Miss twice to win the regional.

Trent (9-0) scattered five hits in 6.1 innings, and Greenwood earned the fourth save of the season, pitching 2.2 scoreless innings

Ole Miss scored its first run in the fourth inning on J.B. Woodman's double to left field. Auston Bousfield's solo homer in the fifth inning extended the lead to 2-0.

Washington (40-16-1) responded in the seventh inning on Robert Pehl's run-scoring single, but left two others stranded. Jeff Brigham (8-1) took the loss for the Huskies.

Ole Miss ascended to No. 1 in the D1Baseball Top 25 rankings. The Rebels won their fourth straight weekend series to improve to 13-2 on the season, and they moved up a spot from No. 2 after top-ranked Texas dropped a road series at unranked South Carolina.
