Flagler's Barnett wins 800th game

Dave Barnett is now one of 12 active Division II coaches with 800 or more victories.

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- Flagler scored 35 runs and pounded out 30 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Trinity Baptist Monday afternoon at Drysdale Field. Head coach Dave Barnett won his 800th game at Flagler after the Saints won the second game 14-0. Flagler took the opener 21-0.

Barnett, in his 28th season, is now one of 12 active Division II coaches with 800 or more victories. In fact, Wednesday's game against Valdosta State will match Barnett against one of those coaches, Greg Guilliams (908).

Flagler has won five consecutive season openers. The last loss came on Feb. 3, 2010, a 6-3 loss at the SCAD.

Nick Kranick got the Flagler offense going in the first inning with a double to the right-center field gap which plated Andrew Brodbeck all the way from first base. Kranick scored later when Skylar Fox hit a double to the left-center field gap.

The Saints kept pouring it on in the second inning with a six-run frame. Brodbeck hit a two-run double and Jon Roszel belted a two-run home run.

Flagler added two more in the third, a single tally in the fourth and erupted for a 10-run fifth.

Ten Saints had at least one hit. Kranick led the way going 4-for-5 with three doubles, six runs batted in and he scored three runs. Fox went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two RBI and he scored a run.

Lorenzo Butler and Igor Baez each hit a home run for Flagler.

Mike O'Reilly (1-0) tossed six shutout innings, scattered three hits and fanned seven. Andrew Castello closed the game and struck out two-of-the-three batters he faced.

Austin Wilson singled twice for Trinity Baptist, a member of the National Christian College Athletic Association. John Shiver also had a base hit.

John Naumann (0-1) tossed 1.2 innings, allowed five hits and five earned runs. He was the first of three pitchers used by the Eagles, who were playing their first intercollegiate game this afternoon.

In the nightcap, Lorenzo Butler's RBI-single in the first would be all of the offense Flagler and starting pitcher Michael Maiocco (1-0) would need.

Maiocco tossed five scoreless innings, scattered two hits and struck out eight to earn his first win in a Saints uniform. Brandan Keen struck out the side in his one inning of work and MacLain Larson tossed the final frame.

The Saints used a four-run second and a six-run third to blow the game wide open.

Brodbeck led the Saints with three singles, three runs scored and he knocked in a run. Shawn Hendon belted a three-run home run in the fifth and had a sacrifice fly in the third. Butler added a two-run ground rule double in the second inning to go along with his RBI-single. Fox singled, doubled and scored two runs.

Jake Frisosky and TJ Lanning each had singles for the Eagles.

Michael Cohick (0-1) tossed two innings, allowed six hits and four earned runs.
