Cal pushes past No. 5 Oregon

BERKELEY, Calif. -- Freshman right-hander Jeff Bain improved his record to 3-0 and Cal got homers from Max Dutto and Chris Paul, as the Golden Bears defeated No. 5 Oregon 9-3 Friday night in the Pac-12 opener at Evans Diamond. David Esquer’s squad has now improved to 14-3 and has won 13 of its last 14 games, including nine consecutive contests.

Bain went 6.1 innings with five hits, three runs, no walks and a strikeout to help Cal win its conference opener. The Bears scored in five of the first six innings, first highlighted by back-to-back RBI doubles by freshman catcher Brett Cumberland and first baseman Paul in the first inning.

Cal also scored twice in the third inning and had a two-run double by junior outfielder Brian Celsi in the fourth inning. Junior second baseman Dutto then hit a solo home run in the fifth inning and Paul had a solo home run in the sixth inning.

“It was a tremendous effort by Jeff Bain in being able to defeat the No. 8-ranked team in the country,” said Esquer. “And, our offense performed well in an opening Friday game of a series, which is always important. It was a great way to start our conference season. It was as good of an atmosphere as I have ever seen at Evans Diamond. There was energy in the air.”
