Nova Southeastern issued public reprimand

A public reprimand and penalties have been issued for the Nova Southeastern University head baseball coach Greg Brown and athletics director Michael Mominey for misconduct during the 2015 NCAA Division II Baseball South Regional held in Livingston, Ala.

On May 16, Brown and Mominey engaged in unprofessional behavior that included inappropriate language and a verbal tirade against the umpire crew chief and umpire evaluator during the seventh inning of the regional baseball game in which Nova Southeastern was participating. As a result of this behavior, the NCAA Division II Baseball Committee removed two days of per diem for the NSU coach and athletics director for the regional.

NCAA guidelines define misconduct as “any act of dishonesty, unsportsmanlike conduct, unprofessional behavior or breach of law, occurring from the time the championship field is announced through the end of the championship that discredits the event or intercollegiate athletics.” Nova Southeastern, located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, lost in double elimination of the regional.

“The NCAA Division II Baseball Committee was disappointed with the unprofessional behavior displayed by the Nova Southeastern baseball coach Greg Brown and the school’s athletics director Michael Mominey,” said Doug Jones, chair of the NCAA Division II Baseball Committee and head baseball coach at Tusculum College.  “The committee expects that coaches and athletics administrators will behave in a professional manner at all times and serve as positive role models for student-athletes at NCAA championships. The committee also expects team representatives to treat game officials with respect regardless of whether they agree or disagree with officiating decisions.”
