Elon's Robbie Welhaf deals first no-hitter of 2017

Elon's Robbie Welhaf needed 100 pitches to no-hit Longwood on Saturday.

Elon junior pitcher Robbie Welhaf had made two starts in his previous two seasons for the Phoenix.

His first start of 2017 couldn’t have gone much better.

Welhaf hurled a no-hitter on Saturday as Elon defeated Longwood 7-0. The right-hander was nearly perfect on the day. Welhaf issued a second inning walk and later hit a batter in the eighth that would be eliminated on a double play.

The Phoenix came out early and sported Welhaf a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second. It would be all he needed as he cruised through nine no-hit innings. Welhaf retired 15 straight batters between the walk and hit-by-pitch, a feat no Elon pitcher has achieved since 2014.

It took Welhaf 100 pitches to get through the Longwood lineup. He struck out eight, allowing just the two baserunners six innings apart.

The win brings Elon to 2-0 on the young season.
