Kentucky vs. UAB
Head Coach Tubby Smith
It was a good win. It wasnt a very pretty game. We did the things necessary to pull out the win. Both teams struggled shooting the ball, but us in particular, we bounced back and made some big stops even though Randolph was in some foul trouble. We had other people step up and do a good job. Were elated to get this win and be moving on.
We settled down and got the ball to people. Then you have make your shots. Weve been working hard on free throw shooting and we needed it. At tournament time youve got to be able to make free throws. I like our guys focus. That tells me were ready and focused.
On never playing UConn in the tournament before I dont know how, through all the years, our paths have not crossed in any type of tournament or individual matchup game.
On Perrys performance He had his legs and he had his quickness. If he didnt do what he did tonight, we wouldnt have won the game. He stepped up big for us because everyone else struggled for us all the way around. I dont think we had another player in double figures. He just had a good all-around game.
Perry: We just talked about at halftime shooting with confidence and being ready to shoot the ball. I got to the free throw line and got some easy buckets and got the dunk there. I credit my teammates for getting the ball to me, getting me open. Without teamwork, those shots wouldnt go down.
Perry: We have four wonderful seniors and were in this tournament to compete for a championship. We didnt come here for anything less. We have to take it one game at a time. We knew UAB would be a tough opponent. And even though we didnt play the best game, we did what we had to get the win and move on in the tournament. Its about surviving now.
Rondo: On handling the pressure That was a big key as well. With us not shooting the well, we handled their press pretty well. We broke their press with patience. We didnt try to force anything.
Stockton: We missed a lot of layups early, and that kept them in the game. Weve been working really hard on our free throw shooting, and we knocked them down today.
Crawford: I just got poked in the eye. I couldnt see right away and I was scared, but then my sight came right and I knew I was alright.
Bradley: UConn got a little scare but they pulled through. I feel like we can play with every team in the country. Youve got to play with a swagger and be hungry. Its a big opportunity playing against a top team. Its what you dream about coming to school.
