BYU-Hawai'i Rolls Past Humboldt State

Laie, HI -- The Brigham Young University Hawaii men's basketball team defeated Humboldt State tonight, 98-84, in the opening round of the NCAA II West Sub-Regional in Laie. The Seasiders trailed only after the first basket of the game in improving to 26-1 and advancing to the second round where they will play Cal State-Dominguez Hills tomorrow night.
Humboldt State's Zac Tiedeman hit a long three-pointer on the Lumberjacks' first possession but J.R. Buensuceso answered with a long three of his own for BYU-Hawaii to spark a 13-0 run by the Seasiders. BYU-Hawaii stretched the lead to 47-34 at halftime by shooting 51.9 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes to just 35.1 for the Lumberjacks.
BYU-Hawaii increased the lead to 19 points early in the second half, but the resilient Lumberjacks battled back to cut the lead to just five, 83-78, with 4:01 to play in the game. However, the Seasiders built the lead back up to double digits and hit enough free throws down the stretch to seal the win. BYU-Hawaii shot 60.7 percent from the field in the second half to finish at 56.4 percent for the game.
Buensuceso led six BYU-Hawaii players in double figures with 21 points. He also hit 4-6 from three-point range and dished out eight assists. Lucas Alves added 17 points, seven rebounds, and three blocked shots while Nate Sims was a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line and finished with 15 points and six rebounds. Jermaine Odjegba shot 6-7 from the field and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds to go with three steals for the Seasiders and Jet Chang netted 12 points off the bench. Trenson Akana added ten points and six rebounds while Marques Whippy chipped in six points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. A.J. Reilly had four assists off the bench.
Tiedeman hit six three-pointers and had 27 points to lead the Lumberjacks, who finish the season 20-12. Kevin Atkins had 19 points and Jameson Figgatt 12 for Humboldt State.
BYU-Hawaii and Cal State-Dominguez Hills will play at 7:30 pm tomorrow night in the Cannon Activities Center in Laie.
