Top-seeded UCM led from start to finish in the game, jumping out to a 16-6 lead by the 11:38 mark thanks to eight points from junior forward Sanijay Watts. The Mules stretched that to 14 on a couple occasions before the eighth-seeded Javelinas (19-11) could get it going. A layup by junior forward Flavio Milam with 5:03 left cut it to eight, but Central Missouri got six more points from Watts and pushed it back to 15 with 42 seconds left before the break. A jumper by senior forward Clyde Johnson with six seconds left made it 34-21 at the half.
Watts had a game-high 14 at the break, while TAMUK was led by senior point guard Wendell Mulkey with seven. The Mules used a 24-to-13 advantage on the glass, and forced nine Javelina turnovers in the period.
Central Missouri made it a 17-point lead early in the final stanza, but the Javelinas quickly put it back down to 12 at the 15:12 mark. TAMUK got it down to nine on two occasions, but the Mules answered both times, the second on a dunk by senior forward Esian Henderson off a feed from classmate Nathan Frazier. Frazier followed that with a three, along with another three from junior guard Alex Moosmann just more than a minute later at the 7:17 mark to make it a 14-point advantage. Moosman (pictured at left) connected on all four of his three point field goal attempts to finish with 12 points.
UCM coasted from there, pushing the lead up to 20 with 5:22 to play. Central Missouri outscored the Javelinas by 10 in the second half, thanks to five threes and 55.6 percent shooting.
Senior forward Anthony Jones led the Hoggies with 10 of his 14 in the second half, eight of which came on dunks. Mulkey finished with 13, while Robert Williams tallied 11.
Watts led the Mule attack with 20 points and 11 boards, while Moosmann had 12 and Henderson put up 11. UCM had a 20-to-10 assist-to-turnover ratio in the game.
The Mules will play in Sunday's semi-final round against the winner of the Midwestern State - Incarnate Word opening round game.
