Macalester won its first game under new head coach Tim Whittle, jumping out to a 39-22 halftime lead and going on to beat Crown 77-60 at the Leonard Center in the season-opener for both teams. The Scots shot 47% from the floor, including 9-for-21 on three-pointers, and received points from 12 different players.

Colin Keeley (Jr., Kildeer, Ill. / Stevenson) posted a double-double, scoring 18 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, to lead the way for Macalester. Jerry Kraus (Sr., Bucharest, Romania / Chaparral – Colo.) just missed a double-double of his own, finishing with 11 points and nine boards. Colin Jarvis (Fy., Madison, Wis. / West) knocked down 4-of-7 from behind the three-point stripe off the bench and finished with 12 points.

Holden Bigler-Johnson (Jr., Austin, Tex. / Anderson) handed out five assists and Paul Richie (Sr., Grand Rapids, Minn.) added four.

Mac’s bench out-scored the Storm bench 41-18. The Scots enjoyed a +5 turnover advantage, which led to an 18-4 advantage in second chance points. Five different Scots blocked shots.

Steve Boger scored 12 points to pace Crown, while Mike Landers contributed 11 points and eight rebounds. Crown was held to a 2-for-11 three-point shooting night.

The Scots came out strong defensively from the start and led 23-7 midway through the first half. Macalester led by 20 late in the first half and went into the intermission up 39-22. Crown, however, quickly cut the lead to nine points at 43-34 five minutes into the second period and was down by seven at 57-50 midway through the half.

Macalester then responded with a decisive 12-1 run to go up with 18 with 3:09 to play to seal the victory.  The Scots began their game-clinching rally with three straight three-pointers, two by Pierce Peters (Fy., Glenwood, Minn. / Minnewaska Area) and one by Richie.

Macalester returns to action next Tuesday (Nov. 24) at Northwestern-Roseville.
