UCSB hits 50 percent from field

LAS VEGAS -- James Nunnally scored 23 points and UC Santa Barbara held off poor-shooting No. 22 UNLV 68-62 Wednesday night.
UC Santa Barbara (5-3) took the lead for good at 40-38 on Justin Joyner's 3-pointer with 16:47 left. UNLV (9-2) got within 58-57 with 2:44 left by pulling off an 11-2 run.
Orlando Johnson made two free throws, Jaime Serna had a jump shot and Nunnally had two free throws that increased the Gauchos' lead to 64-57. Nunnally made four free throws in the final 17 seconds to seal it.
UC Santa Barbara hit 50 percent of its shots. Johnson had 12 points and 15 rebounds and Serna added 12 points.
UNLV (9-2) made only 29 percent of its shots (18 of 62). Chace Stanback had 16 points for the Rebels and Tre'Von Willis had 14 points. Oscar Bellfield had 12 points and eight assists and Derrick Jasper added 10 points.
The Rebels scored the last 12 points of the first half to make it 30-all. The Gauchos had an earlier 9-0 run on 3-pointers by Nunnally, Johnson and Jon Pastorek. UC Santa Barbara made five of its first eight 3s.
