CALIFORNIA, Pa. -- A mixture of hot shooting and solid defense propelled California (Pa.) to a victory against No.13 IUP, 65-54 on Wednesday night in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West showdown.

The win brought Cal U to 13-10 overall this year and 10-7 in the PSAC. With the loss, IUP fell to 17-4 overall and 14-3 in conference.

Steve Swiech led the Vulcans with 14 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. Douglas Jr. Appiah and Tynell Fortune each added 12 points while Travon Vann scored 11 points and gave out four assists.

For the Vulcans, the win snapped an eight-game losing streak against IUP.

Swiech put the Vulcans on the board first with a layup at the 18:21 mark. A 3-pointer by Vann gave Cal U the 5-4 lead before IUP scored six-unanswered points to gain the 10-5 advantage. Swiech connected on a hook shot to bring the Vulcans within one at 19-18.

A Devante Chance jump shot extended the lead to 25-20 with 2:13 left. Fortune then hit a 3-pointer with under a minute remaining before IUP sank two free throws to close out the half up 30-23.

The Vulcans started the second half on a 9-0 run to take the 32-30 lead. A Chad Tipton three at the 13:28-mark extended the Cal U lead to 39-32. Fortune knocked down a jump shot to extend the Vulcan lead to nine at 46-37 with 8:49 to go.

A Vann to Appiah alley-oop followed by a Swiech fast-break dunk put Cal U up 50-39. Fortune converted a traditional three-point play with 3:03 remaining to extend the Vulcan lead to 59-45. Back-to-back Cal U dunks closed out the game.

Cal U shot 59 percent (25-42) from the field and 30 percent (4-13) from beyond the arc. IUP, however, shot just 28 percent (18-64) from the floor and 25 percent (7-27) from deep. The Vulcans out-rebounded the Crimson Hawks 35-29. Cal U lost the turnover battle committing 20 compared to just nine by IUP.

Julian Sanders had 23 points (15 in the first half) to go along with two steals. Anthony Wells totaled seven points, had a team-high six rebounds and six assists. Ashton Smith was held to just 10 points on 3-19 shooting -- Smith came into the game averaging 18.7 points/game.
