Rochester hits buzzer-beater off missed free throw to win

Rochester turned a likely defeat into an improbable victory Sunday with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to beat then-No. 21 Chicago.

But it wasn't just any regular shot, the game-winner came off a purposely-missed free throw.

With 2.7 seconds remaining in overtime, Rochester's Sam Borst-Smith went to the line with a plan in place.

"You always want to score," Borst-Smith told the Democrat & Chronicle on Monday. "I knew I had to make the first free throw to actually have a chance to possibly win or tie. The second one, I just went up and hoped for the best."

Borst-Smith sank the first free throw with ease, but on the second one, he threw the ball off the rim into his own arms and immediately passed it to Mack Montague behind the arc on the left corner.

What came next left everyone in the Louis Alexander Palestra in Upstate New York speechless.

The 77-76 overtime win pushed Rochester's and Chicago's both record to 14-6.
