SEATTLE - Junior guard Anette Ilg hit a spinning 17-footer from inside the top of the key at the final buzzer Friday, lifting UC San Diego to a 66-65 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills in the first round of the NCAA Division II women’s basketball tournament’s West Regional at Brougham Pavilion.
The third-seeded Tritons (27-4) help off furious late rally that saw Dominguez (21-10) score eight straight points and take a 65-64 edge on a 3-pointer by Whitney Gantt with 57 seconds left to play.
San Diego’s Chelsea Carlise missed a 3-pointer at 0:46 and CSDH ran the shot clock down before Neka Mixon missed a jumper that was rebounded by the Tritons Glexis Gaskin.
Ilg received the ball and drove down the floor before stopping just inside the 3-point arc with her back to the free throw line. She spun to her left and swished the jump shot as the horn sounded for the last, and most important, of her 15 points.
Carlisle scored 17 points to lead UCSD, which also got 13 from Gaskin and 10 from Michelle Osier.
Dominguez was paced by the 17 points of Ennisha Kyles and 14 from Mixon.
