Red Rivalry Cup

MILWAUKEE -- The competition between Alverno College and Milwaukee School of Engineering's women's basketball teams now has extra incentive to it. In addition to the crosstown rivalry--a mere seven miles apart in the city of Milwaukee--and the conference rivalry--both are members of the Northern Athletics Conference--the teams will now play for the Red Rivalry Cup for the first time this Saturday.

The name for the traveling trophy and game came from the parallel in both teams' colors.

Brad Duckworth, Alverno Director of Athletics and women's basketball coach, and Dan Harris, MSOE Director of Athletics, came together and wanted to create something special in women's athletics.

"I'm really excited about starting the Red Rivalry with MSOE," Duckworth said. "When Dan approached me about adding tradition behind this game, it was absolutely a no-brainer. If you take a look historically, our women's basketball programs have been very similar. As they've grown, we've grown. I really respect what coach [Jessica] Ott and Dan have done at MSOE."

The teams shared an identical 1-17 NAC record just four seasons ago, but both qualified for the conference tournament last season. In the past three years both have built programs that had the best seasons in terms of wins and secured winning conference records for the first time in team histories.

"We are excited to add to a great crosstown rivalry with Alverno," MSOE head coach Jessica Ott said. "We have had some great games and battles with the Inferno in the past and the Red Rivalry Cup will give an extra meaning for what is already a big conference game."

Alverno has not faced another opponent more in its 11-year history of intercollegiate basketball than the Raiders. The teams have competed 19 times on the basketball court with MSOE leading the all-time series 13-6, including a 6-4 record in the last 10 games.

The site of the Red Rivalry game will alternate locations each season, with this season's game at Alverno's Reiman Gymnasium on Milwaukee's south side and next season's game at MSOE's Kern Center downtown.

Saturday's game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip-off in Reiman Gymnasium, with the presentation of the Red Rivalry Cup at the conclusion of the game. The game will be broadcast live on AIFR and video coverage is available via
