Lander rolls past Wingate
MORROW, Ga. – Kaylyn Small recorded a double-double by scoring 11 points and grabbing 10 rebounds as second-seeded Lander University defeated seventh-seeded Wingate University 86-54 in the quarterfinals of 2011 NCAA Division II Southeast Regional hosted by Clayton State University on Friday at the Athletics and Fitness Center.
Brianna Webb swished a game-high 18 points that included four 3-pointers for the Lady Bearcats (28-3), who will play third-seeded USC Aiken in the semifinals Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
Lander – ranked No. 6 in the current USA Today ESPN Division II Coaches Poll – set a new school record with its 28th win of the season. The Lady Bearcats used a balanced attack with 10 players playing between 15 and 25 minutes.
Jasmine Judge matched Webb with four canned3-pointers as the Bearcats made 10-of-26 launched attempts from behind the arc. Lander shot 46.3-percent from the floor and 38.5 percent from 3-point distance.
Wingate (19-11) was held to 39.2 percent accuracy from the field and 31 percent from 3-point range.
First team All-South Atlantic Conference selection Kurie Washington paced Wingate with 15 points. CC Brooks tacked on 11 points, and Tish Logan led the Bulldogs with six rebounds.
Lander used a pair of 13-0 runs to pull out to a 47-22 halftime advantage. All 10 Bearcats that played in the first half scored and Lander connected 6-of-15 3-pointers for a 40-percent clip.
After trading baskets in the first 90 seconds, the Bearcats scored 13 consecutive points that featured a trio of made 3-pointers by Brianna Webb, Rachelle Rasley and Mukia Myrick. Lander made 53 percent of its shots in the first 20 minutes to take a 25-point cushion into the locker room.
The Lady Bearcats maintained a 20-plus point advantage throughout the second half, building a 37-point gap five times before coasting into the second round by 32 points.
Lander controlled all aspects of the game including a 44-28 rebounding surplus. The Bearcats reserves outscored the Bulldogs bench 42-21 and Lander scored 30 points off 18 Wingate turnovers.
Mukia Myrick handed out seven assists, Ciara Lyons dished out six dimes and Brittni Johnson supplied five helpers as the Bearcats tallied 25 assists on 35 made field goals. Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year Shannon McKever scored eight points off the bench for Lander.
