Ellis, Kust record 18 points apiece to lift No. 9 Hope past No. 17 UW-Whitewater
HOLLAND, Mich. -- In a showdown of nationally ranked teams, No. 9 Hope's defense propelled it to a 63-52 victory against No. 17 UW-Whitewater on Saturday.
The Flying Dutch set the tone from the start behind senior Liz Ellis. Ten minutes into the game, Hope was ahead 14-2 and at halftime the Flying Dutch held a 31-9 advantage by limiting the Warhawks to only 17 percent shooting.
Whitewater committed 15 turnovers in the first 20 minutes, 10 of them off steals. The Warhawks made a late run, cutting Hope's lead to eight points with two minutes remaining. It turned into a free throw shooting contest as Hope scored its last 11 points from the charity stripe.
Ellis and senior Courtney Kust each finished with 18 points while sophomore Hannah Doell had a career-high 15 points, her first double-figure performance of her career.
