VanDerveer to receive Legends of Coaching award

LOS ANGELES -- Stanford's Tara VanDerveer will receive the Legends of Coaching award in April, recognizing college basketball coaches who exemplify John Wooden's high standards of coaching and personal integrity.

The award will be presented at the Los Angeles Athletic Club in conjunction with the Wooden Award presentation to the male and female college players of the year. Wooden's granddaughter, Christy Impelman, announced the winner on Wednesday.

Wooden's daughter, Nan, says that as a fan of women's basketball, her father would have been honored to present the award to VanDerveer.

She joins retired Tennessee coach Pat Summitt as the only women to receive the award. VanDerveer will be the third women's coach to be honored. Geno Auriemma of Connecticut won last year.

VanDerveer is 742-152 in 27 seasons at Stanford. She led her teams to five consecutive Final Four appearances from 2008-12, and the Cardinal have been the Pac-12 champions every year since 2001. She enters this season needing six wins to become the fifth women's coach to reach 900.

Other recipients of the award have included former Stanford coach Mike Montgomery, Duke's Mike Krzyzewski, Jim Calhoun of Connecticut, Jim Boeheim of Syracuse, and Tom Izzo of Michigan State.
