Williams takes third at Westfield State

No. 5 Williams at James Earley Invitational

WESTFIELD, Mass. -- While the twelve men who raced last Saturday at Paul Short had the weekend off, the rest of the Williams men traveled to Westfield State for the James Earley Invitational. The Ephs had last visited Stanley Park, the site of the course, for the New England Regional Championship last fall where they finished fourth. This time Williams was third of 35 teams, as Westfield State took home the title.

Senior captain Max LaBerge, senior Henry Koster and sophomore Kyle Kistinger were all in the top-5 overall at the mile mark. "Our top guys went out in about 4:55-4:58," assistant coach Lance Harden said. "The goal was to have them run more like 5:10-5:15, so that was faster than we had hoped for."

Laberge fared the best of Williams' early frontrunners, as he would hold on for 4th in 26:20. Freshman Kieran Scannell had perhaps the most impressive race on the day for Williams, as he moved up steadily during the race to finish second on the squad and 18th overall in 26:52.

Behind Scannell was fellow freshman Nigel Bates, just a second back in 26:53. Koster was next for Williams, finishing 22nd overall with a time of 26:57. Kistinger was fifth for the Ephs, crossing the line in 27:19 for 33rd place. Rouding out the top-7 were freshman Hiroshi Kirby and senior Chris Cogswell, finishing in 27:23 and 27:33 respectively.

Williams' team score of 96 points landed them third place overall in the meet, behind the host school Westfield State (77 points) and Siena College (84 points).
