PORTLAND, Ore. -- Only one meet into the 2012 season, No. 8 Chico State head coach Gary Towne is excited about the promise his Wildcats displayed Saturday at the Portland-hosted West Coast Conference Preview. Competing in a Division I-dominated field, the ’Cats racked up a third place team finish, with four Chico State runners placing in the top 25.

Butte College transfer Ayla Granados made a solid Chico State debut, completing the 6,000-meter Fernhill Park course in a time of 21:43.68 to finish 11th in the 84-runner field. Amy Schnittger, beginning her final season as a Wildcat, chalked up a 16th place finish with a time of 22:03.40. Also finishing in the top 25 for Chico State were Sara Mikesell (22:16.24, 22nd place) and Paige Henker (22:17.09, 23rd place).

Gonzaga took the WCC Preview’s top women’s team honors, with Loyola Marymount finishing second in the seven-team field. Host school University of Portland and fellow Division I teams Santa Clara, Washington State and St. Mary’s all finished behind the third place Wildcats.
