Ewing, NJ -
Sophomore Kathleen Notos (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) recorded a hat trick as The College of New Jersey opened the 2010 NCAA Division III Field Hockey Tournament with a 4-0 win over the University of New England on Wednesday.

The ninth-ranked Lions (17-4) advance to face Skidmore College (18-1) in the second round of the tournament this weekend in Saratoga Springs, NY.

The Noreasters, who were making their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in just their eighth season, finished their successful season at 13-7.

Notos opened the scoring 6:46 into the game as she tipped in a shot from senior Jessica Falcone (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic).

She then made it a 2-0 game redirecting a centering pass from sophomore Jillian Nealon (Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central). That goal came with 18:20 remaining before the half.

UNE nearly cut that margin in half late in the half as junior Michelle Oswald (Jay, ME/Mt. Blue) blasted a shot off of the post on a penalty corner.

The Lions quickly built their lead to 3-0 in the second half as junior Alex Okuniewicz (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) cashed in on an assist from senior Mary Waller (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright). That goal came 4:17 into the new period.

Notos then capped off her big day poking in a rebound with 18:15 left on the clock. The three goals on the day give Notos a team-leading 16 on the season.

The win was also the 450th victory at TCNJ for head coach Sharon Pfluger

Lion goalie Shannon Syciarz (Garwood, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) made two saves as she picked up her 17th win of the season, which set a career high.

In goal for the Noreasters, senior Ayla Nelson (Auburn, MA/Auburn) finished with six saves.
