Three different players scored goals as the nationally 14th-ranked Cortland field hockey team defeated UMass Dartmouth, 3-0, Wednesday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Div. III Field Hockey Tournament. With the win, the Red Dragons improved to 16-4 on the season and advance to face third-ranked Lebanon Valley Saturday afternoon in the second round at Bowdoin College. The Corsairs' season ended at 15-8.

Freshman Erin Smith (Greene) led Cortland with one goal and one assist. Sophomore Danielle Groneman (East Islip) and freshman Karly Vdoviak (Johnstown) each scored once, and sophomore Sara Woodward (Pine Plains) collected an assist. Senior goalie Ashley Hughes (Selden/Comsewogue) made eight saves in posting the shutout.

Freshman goalie Lauren O'Brien (Rochester, MA/Old Rochester Regional) registered seven saves for UMass Dartmouth.

The Corsairs had the better of play early in the game but couldn't get a shot past Hughes. Their best chance game midway through the first half, but senior Kate Dorrance's (Rehoboth, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth) shot after a scramble in front following a penalty corner went just wide of the left post. Less than two minutes later, Smith gave Cortland a 1-0 lead when she tucked a shot inside the right post after receiving Woodward's cross from the right side. With seven minutes, 43 seconds remaining in the opening half, Smith set up Groneman's one-time goal in front also with a cross from the right.

In the second half, neither team created a real quality chance until Vdoviak finished off the scoring in the 61st minute. Vdoviak possessed the ball in her defensive third, carried the length of the field and beat O'Brien inside the right post with a long blast from just inside the arc.

The Corsairs out shot the Red Dragons, 14-12, and held a 16-8 advantage in penalty corners.
