Shepherd, Washburn crack DII top 10

The top six teams in the AFCA Division II Coaches’ Top 25 Poll remained the same, but losses by Pittsburg State and West Alabama caused a reshuffling of the rankings from No. 7 on down. Minnesota State-Mankato still holds the No. 1 spot for a second consecutive week, but lost a first-place vote to No. 2 Northwest Missouri State. The Mavericks have 25 first-place votes while the Bearcats have seven this week. Colorado State-Pueblo, Missouri Western State and Henderson State round out the top five.

Bloomsburg remained at No. 6, then the changes begin. Then-No. 7 Pittsburg State lost to No. 2 Northwest Missouri State 24-15 in the Fall Classic, dropping the Gorillas to No. 12 in this week’s poll, while then-No. 8 West Alabama fell 13 spots to No. 21 after its 45-21 loss to No. T-18 Midwestern State. Minnesota-Duluth and North Carolina-Pembroke each moved up two spots to seventh and eighth, respectively. Entering the top 10 are Shepherd, up two spots to No. 9, and Washburn, up three positions to No. 10.

Indiana (Pa.) and Newberry both fell out of the poll this week, making room for Lenoir-Rhyne and Saginaw Valley State. Both teams were ranked in the preseason poll and fell out after the first week. Lenoir-Rhyne comes in at No. 24 after handing then-No. 23 Newberry a 35-14 loss, while Saginaw Valley State is No. 25 with a 6-1 mark after its 14-10 victory against Wayne State.

There is only one Top 25 matchup this week as No. 4 Missouri Western State plays host to No. 12 Pittsburg State. This begins a four-week stretch for the Griffons where they could possibly face four consecutive ranked opponents to end the season.
