Garrett Gilbert accounted for six touchdowns to lead SMU back from a 21-point deficit to outscore Temple 59-49. Gilbert finished the game with a Mustangs-record 538 passing yards, four touchdown passes and 97 yards and two TDs rushing. His school-record 635 yards of total offense were the seventh-most in a game in NCAA history. Led by Gilbert, SMU also set a school record with 728 yards of total team offense.
Ejiro Ederaine had quite a game to keep Fresno State undefeated. He had a career-high 10 tackles, 4.5 tackles for a loss, two sacks and a big fumble return for a touchdown. The 78-yard return was the longest fumble return in school history and led to the Bulldogs moving to 7-0 for the first time since 1991.
Duke’s Ross Martin accounted for all the first-half scoring with field goals of 51 and 53 yards, the second a career-best on the final play of the first half. Martin became the first FBS kicker this season with two field goals of 50-plus yards in the same game. The Blue Devils ended a 12-game losing streak in the series against the Hokies, winning for the first time since 1981. It also was the first win for Duke against a ranked team since 1994 and first victory against a ranked team on the road since 1971.
