SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Coastal Carolina remained the No. 1 team in the Football Championship Subdivision Coaches' Poll despite a mix of upsets in the lower half of the poll. Eight ranked teams fell on Saturday, all outside the top 10 in the rankings.
Coastal Carolina garnered 20 of the 26 first-place votes for the second consecutive week for a total of 639 points. The Chanticleers improved to 11-0 on Saturday with a 52-21 win against Monmouth. Quarterback Alex Ross threw for three touchdowns and also rushed for a score to lead the Chanticleers to the victory.
North Dakota State stayed at No.4 this week, while garnering one first-place vote. The Bison picked up a 45-10 road victory at Missouri State on Saturday. Eastern Washington rounded out the top five once again. The Eagles were idle last week and will close out the regular season this week at Portland State.
Villanova held steady at sixth with a 48-31 win against Albany to improve to 9-2. Illinois State remained seventh, earning a 45-26 win at South Dakota. Fordham came in eighth after claiming its 10th win of the year with a lopsided 52-7 win against Georgetown.
Chattanooga and Southeastern Louisiana rounded out the top 10 for the second consecutive week. Chattanooga improved to 8-3 with a 38-17 victory against Tennessee Tech. Tenth-ranked Southeastern Louisiana topped then-No. 11 McNeese State 28-9 to also improve to 8-3.
Three new teams claimed spots in the top 25 this week. James Madison enters at No. 22 after pulling the upset against No. 14 Richmond 55-20. Alcorn State returned to the top 25 after improving to 9-2 with a 56-6 win against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Sacred Heart also reentered the poll with an upset victory against No. 21 Bryant 14-7.
