Conference championship week is here and we are just days away from the playoff committee announcing its selections.
The title contest that could shake up those selections the most is the ACC Championship Game between top-ranked Clemson and coastal winner No. 10 North Carolina.
The Tigers are guaranteed a spot, if not the top spot, in the playoffs with a win. If North Carolina can pull off the upset, the Tar Heels have a serious case to be considered or will pave the way for one of the teams barely on the outside.
Here is what to watch for in the Palmetto-Tar Heel states showdown in Charlotte and other championships around the nation.
Other storylines to watch:
Which Big Ten team will push its way into the playoff? Signs point to the Big Ten champion receiving a spot in the playoff. But will it be the Hawkeyes or the Spartans? Iowa earned its first ever 12-0 regular season. Michigan State has one loss but knocked off defending champion Ohio State in Columbus two weeks ago.
Will Florida have enough steam against Alabama? Alabama and Florida will meet for the eighth time in the SEC Championship. For Alabama, it's simple. Win and you're in the playoff. Meanwhile, the Gators will hope to erase dismal performances against Florida Atlantic and rival Florida State in recent weeks. Florida's offense has gone stale during the last month, so the Gators would really need to look toward their No. 2 SEC defense. The East Division hasn't won the conference title in six straight seasons. A Crimson Tide loss would shake up the college football playoff rankings.
Is Stanford on the outside looking in? The Cardinal isn't 100 percent out of the playoff discussion just yet. If the Tar Heels and Gators pull off the upsets, two-loss Stanford could be considered. This assumes that Stanford puts together one of its best performances against a red-hot USC team that has turned around its season.
