ATHENS, Ga. - The Georgia men¹s golf team is ranked No. 1 in the first Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches Poll of the spring, which was released on Wednesday.
The Bulldogs garnered nine of the 22 first-place votes to take the top spot.
No. 2 Oklahoma State (four), No. 3 Southern Cal (seven), No. 4 Alabama (one) and No. 7 Illinois (one) received the other first-place votes.
³It¹s flattering to be ranked No. 1, but as any coach will tell you, the polls don¹t mean anything until after the NCAAs in May,² Georgia coach Chris Haack said. ³We will continue to work hard in practice and in qualifying to make sure we have the best team on the course representing the University of Georgia. That¹s really all that we can do. Everything else will take care of itself.²
The Bulldogs also ended the fall with the No. 1 ranking after posting three
top-5 finishes, including wins at the Brickyard Collegiate and the Isleworth Invitational events.
Golf World Magazine, Nike Golf and the Golf Coaches Association of America produce the Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches Poll.
Georgia also is ranked No. 1 in the Golfstat poll, while the Bulldogs are No. 2 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index.
Georgia will open the spring portion of the 2008-09 season Feb. 27 at the Puerto Rico Shootout.
