AUSTIN, Texas -- Barry's Daniel Stapff shot an opening-round 4-under 68 en route to a 7-under first day at the St. Edward's Invitational to grab control of the lead Monday.

Stapff, whose 7-under 137 is four shots better than second place Ben Taylor of Nova Southeastern, has positioned the Buccaneers in second place entering Tuesday's final round on the 6,909-yard Grey Rock Golf Course.

Barry's Marcus Sergerstrom shot a 5-over 149 in the opening two rounds, and is in a three-way tie for 11th entering the final round.

The Buccaneers shot 297-292--589 Monday. Nova holds the top spot after shooting 290-298 for a 12-over 588. Taylor fired a 5-under 67 in the first round before carding 74 on the following 18 holes. St. Edward's Santiago Quintero was the only other player in the 17-team, 90-player field to shoot under par through the first two rounds.

Abilene Christian's Alex Carpenter shot even-par 144.

Barry's Scott Smyers is tied for 14th after back-to-back 75s. Simon Forsslund shot 80-73 -- 153, and sits in a tie for 19th. Marcelo Huarte shot 159 in the opening two rounds.

Host St. Edward's is third, 10 strokes behind the Buccaneers.

Stapff and Quinterro each had 10 birdies to lead the tournament field. Smyers rattled off seven birdies, and Forsslund eagled one hole. In a model of consistency, Sergerstrom leads the field with 28 pars. Stapff has 23.
