Guilford wins Pine Needles Intercollegiate title

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. -- Guilford junior Nick Shedd won his second consecutive individual title and helped the Quakers to the team title at the seven-school Pine Needles Intercollegiate Tuesday. Shedd is the first Quaker to win consecutive medalist honors since Noah Ratner captured the first three events of the 2011-12 season.

Shedd's three-over-par 74 in Tuesday's final round at the Pine Needles Golf & Lodge earned a four-shot victory against Hampden-Sydney's Brian Burt in the 35-man field. Shedd helped Guilford to its first team title of the year, a 22-shot triumph against second-place Cape Fear Community College. The Quakers are ranked fourth in the Nike Golf Division III Coaches' Poll.

Each of Guilford's four scorers, plus individual Drew Thompson, placed among the top-10 finishers. After Shedd, who shot 69-74-143 (+1), rookie Tanner Gross fired 72-76-148 and shared third place with Thompson (74-74-148) and Cape Fear's Tanner Pearson (75-73-148). Rookie Ty Palmer posted Guilford's low round Tuesday and shared sixth place at 76-73-149. Senior Dallas Page carded a 75 for a two-round 151 that place 10th. Brad White had a 73 Tuesday and finished one stroke behind Page in 12th place at 79-73-152.

Pearson's 73 and Matt Elliott's 74 helped Cape Fear shoot 303 Tuesday, seven behind Guilford for Tuesday's low team score. The Sea Devils placed second with a 308-302-610, five strokes better than Hampden-Sydney (312-303-615), which shot 303 Tuesday to share third place with Averett University (311-304-615).
