
ST. HELENA ISLAND, S.C. -- Guilford earned its second conseceutive tournament title Tuesday with an eight-shot victory in the TaylorMade adidas Intercollegiate at the Dataw Island Golf Club.
The No. 6 Quakers led from wire to wire in the 54-hole tournament on the par-72, 6,789-yard course in the South Carolina Lowcountry. Guilford shot 294-301-314-909 to outdistance the 14-team field, which included five schools ranked among the top 25 in NCAA Division III according to Golfstat.com. Concordia (Texas) shot Tuesday's second-low round Tuesday (302) and leapfrogged Hampden-Sydney into second place with a 300-315-302-917. Led by individual medalist Brian Burt and runner-up Rick O'Connell, Hampden-Sydney placed third with a 307-301-313-921.
Guilford had five golfers place among the top-18 finishers in the 90-man field. Rookies Tanner Gross and Ty Palmer shared seventh place after shooting 11-over 227. Senior Dallas Page shared 12th place with a 229, two shots better than teammate Drew Thompson, who placed 19th with a 231. Playing as an individual, junior Mitch Robinette came home in 16th place at 230. Guilford's Nick Shedd shot the Quakers' low score Tuesday (76) and shared 22nd place.
Hampden-Sydney's Burt shot 1-over 217 for the tournament, including a 2-over 74 in Tuesday's final round. He edged teammate Rick O'Connell by two strokes after O'Connell fired a 75-72-72-219.
