ENFIELD, N.Y. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team leads all 41 teams after a very successful first round at the NCAA Championships. The No. 3 ranked Stags were 2-over (286) and the next closest team was No. 2 St. Thomas who finished the day at +13. Additionally, senior Kethan Reddy and freshman Alex Wrenn are the top two individuals in the field of 210 golfers.
CMS played on the par 71 Mendon course today and will tee off on the par 72 Midvale course on Wednesday.
Reddy leads the field at 3-under on the day with five birdies. He was at even par through the first nine and then scored three birdies in the last four holes to end up with a 68 on the day. Just behind him sits teammate Wrenn at 1-under. Through nine holes, Wrenn was at +1 but then three birdies on the back nine took him back under par to wrap up with a 70.
Sophomore Jonathan Shaw sits in a tie for 18th at 2-over (73) so far, and recorded 13 pars in the first 18 holes. Rounding out the scoring for CMS on the first day was sophomore Matt Shuman who started off hot. He was in a tie for the lead after his first six holes at 2-under. After two double-bogeys to finish off the front nine, Shuman rallied on the second nine to shoot 75 on the day.
Sophomore Johnny Brandt finished with a birdie on the final hole to come in at 9-over on the day, slightly higher than his +5.63 average.
The Stags tee off tomorrow, May 11, at 8 a.m. EDT on the Midvale course. CMS is still paired with LaGrange and Luther who sit at No. 13 and No. 31 respectively.
