2014 NC Women's Gymnastics: National Qualifier - Recap

Welcome to the championship
Six teams -- Oklahoma, Michigan, Georgia, Stanford, LSU and Illinois -- competed in Friday afternoon's first semifinal session at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Center in Birmingham, Ala. The top three teams, as well as the top-scoring individuals, from the session earned a spot in the finals.

Getting the lineup
A fan takes down the rotation schedule before the start of the semifinal. Four teams compete on a different event at a time, while the other two have a rotational bye.

Moment of reflection
Sarah Fiedler, second from right, looks into the stands during the national anthem.

Tiger pride
A large -- and vocal -- group of LSU fans traveled to Birmingham to watch their team compete. The Tigers made sure the trip was a success, earning a spot in the finals.

Supporting their squad
Georgia fans get loud and show their support for their Bulldogs moments before Georgia began its first event. First up for the Bulldogs was the vault.

Moment of concentration
Oklahoma's Chayse Capps does her routine on the balance beam -- the Sooners' first event of the day.

Getting ready
Oklahoma coach K.J. Kindler talks to Taylor Spears before her turn on the balance beam. Whatever she said worked as the Sooners moved onto Saturday's team final.

A supportive Tiger
While waiting for their turn on the floor exercise, LSU gymnasts support their teammate during her turn. Only Tiger coach D-D Breaux was staying calm during the routine.

Striking a pose
LSU's Rheagan Courville holds a pose for the judges during her floor routine.

Staying balanced
Joanna Sampson of Michigan goes through her routine on the balance beam. Despite her scoring a tam-high 9.850, it wasn't enough for the Wolverines who failed to qualify for the finals.
