BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Peter Lenes netted a hat trick as Vermont defeated Minnesota Duluth 5-1 Friday night.

Lenes gave Vermont a 1-0 lead at 16:29 of the first period scoring on a power play. The goal came off a rebound on a shot by Kenny Macaulay, who picked up an assist along with Brady Leisenring.

Lenes scored again less than two minutes later again on a rebound, this time off a shot by Chris Myers to give Vermont a 2-0 lead. Myers and Dean Strong each got an assist.

Minnesota-Duluth (0-3-0) got on the board in the second period when Michael Gergen scored on shot that went off the glove of Joe Fallon to make it 2-1.

The Catamounts responded at 9:42 of the second period when Lenes scored his third goal off another rebound on a shot by Corey.

Less than a minute later, Jaime Sifers skated in alone on goalie Nate Ziegelmann and scored on a wrist shot to make it 4-1.

Vermont added to its lead when Leisenring scored on a power play at 12:24 of the second period off an assist from Torrey Mitchell.

In the third period, the Bulldogs failed to score in a five-minute power play or on a 5-on-3 power play. They were 0-of-6 for the game, while the Catamounts were 3-of-4.

Sophomore goalie Nate Ziegelmann made his debut for Minnesota Duluth, but was replaced by Isaac Reichmuth in the second period. Vermont led in shots on goal, 27-20.

All of Vermont's wins this season have come against WCHA teams: Michigan Tech and Alaska Anchorage. Vermont is a first-year member of Hockey East.
