Denver, Colo. - Junior forward Ryan Lasch (Lake Forest, Calif.) helped the #19 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team bring home two points from Denver, as Lasch's overtime goal lifted the Huskies to a huge 2-1 win at #5 University of Denver.
The victory helped the Huskies move back into a tie for fifth place in the WCHA with 27 points, along with Minnesota and Minnesota Duluth with one week remaining in the regular season of conference play.  SCSU currently owns an 18-14-2, 13-12-1 WCHA record, while league leader Denver falls to 20-10-4, 16-8-3 WCHA.
With the score knotted at 1-1, Lasch broke up a Denver pass behind the Pioneers' net and then converted the steal into the game winning goal at :20 of the OT session.  He slipped the puck past DU netminder Marc Cheverie, who had 25 saves in the match.
Denver gained the upper hand in the game at 6:34 of the second period, when Tyler Ruegsegger scored on a power play goal with helpers from Joe Colborne and Anthony Maiani.
In the third period, SCSU sophomore Drew LeBlanc (Hermantown) scored his second goal of the weekend with a power play marker of his own at 5:11.  Lasch and teammate Garrett Roe (Vienna, Va.) each had assists on the goal, which was LeBlanc's eighth of the season.  The assist was Roe's 30th of the 2008-09 season, and it was his 44th season point at SCSU.
The goal capped a strong second half for the Huskies.  In the first two periods, SCSU was outshot 20-15 by the Pioneers.  In the third period, SCSU outshot the Pioneers 11-4 and then Lasch brought home the victory with his unassisted goal.
In the nets, junior Jase Weslosky (St. Albert, Alberta) was a pillar of stability for the Husies with 23 saves in the contest.  SCSU outshot the Pioneers 27-24 in the game.  SCSU was 1-of-9 on the advantage and Denver was 1-of-7 on the advantage.
SCSU will continue its quest for home ice in the upcoming WCHA playoffs with a home-home series against Minnesota State.  On March 6, the Huskies will host the Mavericks at the National Hockey Center.  Game time for this game is 7:07 p.m., and it will feature a salute for SCSU seniors Michael Olson, John Swanson, Dave Carlisle and Brent Borgen.  On March 7, the Huskies will travel to Manakto for a 7:07 p.m. drop against MSU.
