April 10, 2009
WASHINGTON (Ticker) - One day before attempting to win its fifth national championship, Boston University has a Hobey BakerAward winner in the fold.
Senior defenseman Matt Gilroy on Friday was named the winner of college hockey's top individual prize, beating out Terriers teammate Colin Wilson and goaltender Brad Thiessen of Northeastern University.
The captain of Boston University, which takes on Miami of Ohio in the Frozen Four championship game on Saturday, Gilroy became the second Terrier to win the Hobey BakerAward. Current New York Rangers captain Chris Drury accomplished the feat in 1998.
A native of North Bellmore, New York, Gilroy has recorded eight goals and 28 assists in 43 games this season, leading all Hockey East defensemen in scoring and ranking third in the nation among blue-liners.
Gilroy became the first defenseman in conference history to be named a Hockey East First Team All-Star three times. He also captured the Walter Brown Award as the best American-born college player in New England.
