Rocker deflects 31 shots in net to help SUNY Cortland upset No. 8 Utica
CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Junior goalie Lyle Rocker stopped all 31 shots he faced and sophomore Nick Zappia recorded his first career hat trick as SUNY Cortland skated past eighth-ranked Utica 5-0 Friday in non-conference action at Alumni Arena.
Senior Michael Lysyj supported Zappia with a goal and an assist, and junior A.J. Moyer added a goal for the Red Dragons (5-8-2). Juniors Stephen Nardi, Mike Henrici, Matt McNamee, Brian Roller, Adam Bevilacqua and sophomore Jeff Vanzant each chipped in with one assist.
The Pioneers (11-3) played three goalies in the game. Junior Nick Therrien started, making five saves in 10 minutes, 48 seconds. Sophomore Mike Taffe took over and registered three saves in 9:35. Freshman Gordon Ceasar stopped 21 shots in 38:45. The Pioneers allowed an empty-net goal late in the game.
Zappia scored his first of the night on a sharp-angled shot from the left side four minutes into the first period. Lysyj made it 2-0 at 10:48 when his wrist shot from the right circle bounced off Therrien and into the goal. After Cortland was whistled for a penalty to start the second period before the faceoff, Zappia netted a short-handed goal 23 seconds later, stuffing the puck past Taffe on the right side of the goal.
Moyer scored at 8:45 of the third period when he took a pass from Lysyj and deked Ceasar in front to make it 4-0. Zappia completed the scoring and his hat trick, rifling in a rebound on the left side into an empty net at 17:22 after Utica pulled Ceasar for an extra skater.
