SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- For the first time in school history, Union (N.Y.) has earned a No. 1 ranking in the national polls.
The Dutchmen (26-6-4), coming off their third consecutive Whitelaw Cup title, moved into the top spot in the USCHO.com poll after spending two weeks in the No. 2 position. Union has spent 15 weeks in the top 10, and is holding steady at No. 2 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll.This past weekend, the Dutchmen had a pair of 5-2 victories to earn the ECAC Hockey tournament title. In the semifinals they beat Cornell, before trumping Colgate in the title game on Saturday night.
Union will meet 14th-ranked Vermont in the NCAA East Regional semifinals this Friday in Bridgeport, Conn.
Minnesota dropped one spot to No. 2 after losing in the Big Ten semifinals to Ohio State.
