Ice hockey video review rule amended

The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Committee on Thursday approved adjustments to video replay rules in ice hockey.

The NCAA Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey Rules Committee recommended the amendment, which affects reviews of goals scored after infractions involving offsides or too many players on the ice, with the goal of limiting some lengthy reviews while maintaining the ability to correct egregious errors.

Adjustments to the video replay rule for the 2017-18 season are:

  • The opportunity for a review exists until the puck leaves the offending team’s attacking zone; a stoppage of play occurs and a faceoff is conducted; or the defending team gains possession and control of the puck.
  • An on-ice official’s ability to initiate a review, without a coach’s challenge, is extended to the last 10 minutes of the game and any overtime periods in regular-season games. Previously, the time limit was the last two minutes of the game or any overtime period.

In postseason games, on-ice officials can initiate a review of this type at any point in the game.
