The road to the NCAA postseason has begun. As the regular season winds down and conference tournaments begin, star players across the nation have turned it up a notch. NCAA.com takes their weekly look at the Three Stars, highlighting the three best players college hockey had to offer.
1 – Chris Nell, Bowling GreenThe Green Bay, Wisconsin native led the Falcons to a sweep of Alabama Huntsville in WCHA action. In Friday night’s 7-0 shutout of the Chargers, the junior netminder made 33 saves to keep UAH off the board. On Saturday, he made another 38 saves without allowing a goal in a 2-0 victory against Alabama Huntsville. On the season, Nell has a 2.19 goals against average and a .912 save percentage to go along with four shutouts.
2 – Dylan Gambrell, DenverThe sophomore forward led the No. 1 ranked Denver Pioneers to victories in both contests against St. Cloud State over the weekend. In Friday’s 4-3 overtime victory, the Bonney Lake, Washington native scored two goals to lead the way for Denver. He followed that up with three assists in Saturday’s 7-2 win against the Huskies. For the weekend he totaled five points on two goals and three assists in addition to four shots on goal and a +5 rating. On the season, he leads Denver in scoring with 34 points on 11 goals and 23 assists.
3 – Blaine Byron, MaineThe Ottawa, Ontario native had a stellar weekend for the Maine Black Bears. In Friday’s 5-4 overtime loss to Northeastern he had a goal and an assist. On Saturday, he had four points on a goal and three assists in a 5-4 victory. For the weekend he finished with six points on two goals and four assists, while also registering seven shots on goal. The senior forward leads the team in scoring with 40 points on 18 goals and 22 assists.
