ERIE, Pa. – Almost three seasons have gone by since the Mercyhurst College women’s hockey team was ranked No. 1 in the country. But after making a run to the national championship game last season and completing a two-game sweep of Bemidji State to start 2009, the Lakers have regained the title of best team in the country, USCHO.com officials revealed in their first Top-10 Women’s Hockey Poll of the season Monday afternoon.

The Lakers accumulated 140 points and eight first-place votes to earn top billing in the national poll. Minnesota placed second with 139 points and six first-place nods, followed by New Hampshire in third with 115 points and Wisconsin at fourth with 112 points and the final first-place nod. St. Lawrence rounded out the top-5 with 71 points.

Minnesota Duluth (63), Clarkson (53), Dartmouth (40), Harvard (28) and Boston University (19) completed the poll in spots 6 – 10.

The No. 1 Lakers return to action in two weeks with a road series at Rensselaer, beginning on Friday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m.
