C.W. Post Defends Title With 14-9 Win Over LeMoyne
May 30, 2010
BALTIMORE (AP) -Eddie Plompen scored four goals and C.W. Post used a dominant second half to defeat LeMoyne 14-9 and repeat as Division II lacrosse national champion Sunday.
Joe Meo and Keith Rodriguez scored three goals each for C.W. Post (16-1), which has captured three national titles.
Nick Coric and Justin Patterson both had a goal and two assists for the Pioneers, who outscored the Dolphins 9-1 in the second half.
It was a rematch of last year's final between the two New York rivals and a back-and-forth affair featuring runs by both teams. Rodriguez scored two goals as C.W. Post, located on Long Island, raced to an early 4-1 lead.
Jack Harmatuk scored three goals and assisted on another. LeMoyne (15-2) led 8-5 at halftime.
LeMoyne head coach Dan Sheehan pulled starting goalie Matt Krupka at that point and backup Jeff White made a couple saves to spark the Syracuse school, which closed the first half with a 7-1 run.
C.W. Post regrouped at intermission and opened the second half with a 5-0 run. Meo scored two goals and Patterson contributed a goal and an assist.
Plompen, who had five points and was selected the game's Most Outstanding Player, capped the onslaught by beating White one-on-one to give the Pioneers a 10-8 lead at the 12:54 mark of the fourth quarter.
Vinnie Alexander scored an unassisted goal to snap a scoreless drought of 24 minutes, 10 seconds and get LeMoyne back within one. However, Plompen scored two more goals to key a 4-0 run by C.W. Post to close out the contest.
Harmatuk, the Division II Attackman of the Year, was shut out in the second half.
LeMoyne fell in the finals for the third straight season after winning back-to-back national championships in 2006 and 2007.
